Pumpkin Halloween Design

We don't really do Halloween downunder. My first ever sight of a carved pumpkin Jack O'Lantern was in Scotland when we lived there for a year when I was a kid. I loved them, longed for one, even butchered a hapless pumpkin in my 8 year old fervour for one. A desperate failure, I suspect and I've never had one since.

The country where they really go all out for Halloween activities is the USA. And influenced by US TV,  the kids here are starting to pick it up. What's not to like about dressing up, scaring people and the legalized taking of sweets from strangers? The only problem is that when the local kids go trick-or-treating and knock on doors, they often get blank looks. Or a diatribe about it not being our tradition and watching too much American TV.

A couple of years ago I was heading off to the supermarket and I saw a small gang of kidlets down the end of my street dressed as ghosts and ghouls and pumpkins, clearly going trick-or-treating, and though I kind of agree with the "not-our-tradition" folks, it's a bit of fun for kids, and these kids had gone to a lot of trouble and looked really cute,  so I bought some chocolates and lollies for when they got to my house.

I was only gone half an hour, and it was still light when I got home, but my door got nary a knock.
So there I was with a small pile of the sort of stuff I try not to buy or bring into the house. What to do with it all? Oh, the dilemma!

Anyway, since I enjoy crafts, and in my neck of the woods we're in for a long, wet weekend, I thought I'd share a few easy, kid-friendly halloween crafts. They're all in paper, so cheap, fun and easy is the theme.

If you have any littlies who want masks, there are some good, simple ones here.

You might want to make a lovely Halloween decoration — collect a bunch of interesting twigs, spray paint them black and hang the paper decorations below from them. Easy, gorgeous and cheap.

The decorations below are printable and downloadable free from the craft ideas site. There are lots more good ideas on this site.pumpkin

Here's a downloadable paper origami cat that comes in black or marmalade — just print it off, cut fold and glue — dead easy. (pun intended, heh heh) I've made these and I really like them. Tammy Yee, the designer, has other animals that are print and cut out, too, including bats, and some really beautiful owls.

The hanging paper pumpkins below are both elegant and amazingly easy. All you need is orange and green paper, scissors and glue or a stapler and some cotton to hang them. They're a variation on some Christmas deco designs I've made before, and it's all about strips of paper that are different lengths.
A different, just as easy and elegant design is here.
So whether you celebrate Halloween or not, enjoy the evening and don't scare the kids too much.

Happy Sweetest Day

The Truth About Sweetest Day!
A few days ago I mentioned to my boyfriend that Sweetest Day was around the corner. Him, forgetting dates as usual, had no idea that sweetest day was coming up. I'd be lucky to get him to remember our anniversary. Anywho, he mentioned to me that Sweetest Day is for the guys, while Valentine's Day is for the girls. Now, this wasn't the first time that I'd heard such gibberish, but I really wanted to know the significance behind Sweetest's Day.

What I found is very astounding! Sweetest Day is really about doing something 'sweet' for another individual; doing good deeds out of the kindness of your heart. It's about showing people that you really care about them, and since most people associate caring with gift-giving... there you go!

There's no wonder that our University hosts volunteer events every Sweetest Day! It's amazing that I was really freaking out about what I should get my boyfriend this year! Who am I kidding??? I'll get him something, along with my parents and siblings :-) Anddddd, if I'm not swamped with studying this weekend, I'll also volunteer!

Hi everyone!! I have a card to share with you today that is a CASE of Keva!!  It is her blogaversary and so she issued a challenge to pick one of her cards to CASE.  She has so many great ones to choose from but I chose one from March.
Here is Keva's card that I CASED.  It is a beauty!

I just loved the simplicity of this card and I have had on my "list to do" to stamp on my ledger paper so I thought that this would be a great one to CASE.

Fred Shuttlesworth

Shuttlesworth was a Civil Rights legend…one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957.
He wasn’t perfect.
He didn’t always get it right.
Shuttlesworth wasn’t patient or easy…he shaped with rough pressure rather than smooth grace.
Shuttlesworth was an activist’s activist…an organizer for social change who witnessed much of the change he organized for.
Not all of it.
The Prize is still on the horizon.
But Shuttlesworth’s fingerprints are all over many of the rights we take for granted today.
I’ve often thought that a person is lucky if they can touch one life; inspire one person to work against injustice in this world.
The work of Shuttlesworth inspired thousands if not millions…

all about Conference Center

The 1.4 million square foot (130,000 m2) Conference Center seats 21,200 people in its main auditorium. This includes the rostrum behind the pulpit facing the audience, which provides seating at general conference for 158 general authorities and general officers of the church and the 360-voice Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The auditorium is large enough to hold a Boeing 747 inside. All seats in the audience have an unobstructed view of the pulpit because the balcony is held up by radial trusses. This construction method allows the balcony to sink 5⁄8 inches (16 mm) under full capacity. Behind the podium is a 7,667-pipe and 130-rank Schoenstein pipe organ. Underground is a parking garage that can hold 1400 cars. A modernist, three-story chandelier hangs in a skylight in the interior of the building.
External walls of the Conference Center are clad in precisely-cut quartz monzonite (a close relative of granite). A 92-foot (28 m) glass-centered spire denotes the religious purpose of the building. A 67-foot (20 m) stepped waterfall descends from the spire. The waterfall utilizes water from a natural spring found underneath the building during construction. City Creek flows in a rough-hewn riverbed, complementing the Conference Center.
Because the building sits near the base of Salt Lake City's Capitol Hill, the roof is landscaped for attractiveness. About 3 acres (12,000 m²) of grass and hundreds of trees have been planted on the roof. Twenty-one native grasses were employed to conserve water and showcase local foliage. The landscaping is meant to echo the mountains and meadows of Utah.
